The Philippines is indeed very proud of Michael Martinez for being the first-ever Pinoy to compete in the Winter Olympics
Living in a tropical country did not become a hindrance for Martinez to pursue his dreams of excelling in his chosen sport - the figure skating.
According to Presidential Communications Operations Office secretary Sonny Coloma, a warm welcome and recognition awaits Martinez in his return to the country.
The 17-year-old Muntinlupa resident finished 19th during the short program of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. He also finished 19th during the medal round.
Despite failing to get a medal, Martinez already made history for being the first representative of the Philippines to the Winter Olympics.
Apart from that, he said he also feels like he's already a winner for being able to compete against his idols - Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan and Patrick Chan of Canada, who won gold and silver medals respectively.
