Julia Barretto is formally announced as ‘Cofradia’

Julia Barretto has been formally announced as the lead star in ABS-CBN’s TV remake of Cofradia, a 1953 movie based on a novel by Dominador Ad Castillo.

Even before she was launched as one of the members of Star Magic Circle 2013, news about Julia’s playing the role of Cofradia has already surfaced.

Cofradia is a young lady who is afraid to fall in love because of her black skin. But because of her good heart, she will transform to become beautiful and light skinned with the help of a magic candle.

I wonder if this will also cause a “racist” stir just like when Barbie Forteza’s Negrita was aired.

Gloria Romero was the first actress to portray the role of Cofradia in 1953 when she was highly popular. Gina Alajar also did Cofradia in 1973, as well as Lotlot de Leon in the 1988 Regal Films trilogy titled Love Letters.

No news yet on who will be Julia’s leading man in the series, but Julian Estrada, also a member of Star Magic Circle 2013, is highly-favored by fans.
