Sam Milby will be leaving this Friday to attend the Cannes Film Festival in France as the movie he stars in is competing in the widely known movie festival.
Death March, where Sam plays the role of an American soldier, is one of the three Filipino films luckily chosen to be part of this year’s “Cannes.”
Directed by Adolf Alix Jr., the movie is based on the World War II event in the Philippines where around 80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war (POW) were forcibly transferred by the Japanese Army, making them walk 120 km from Mariveles, Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga. From there, the POWs were loaded to a box train and brought to Camp O’Donell in Capas, Tarlac. Approximately 2,500–10,000 Filipino and 100-650 American prisoners died during the march which was characterized by physical abuse and murder.
Most of the scenes in the movie which also stars Zanjoe Marudo and Jason Abalos were just shot in studios using technology to achieve the desired effects. It’s not the effects that will be the selling point of the movie, though, but the storyline which will surely relit the fire of patriotism in the hearts of Pinoys.
Death March is competing in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes Film Festival 2013.
