A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck North Cotabato on Saturday night, June 1, 2013.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the earthquake at exactly 10:10:05 PM with epicenter located 12 kilometers (km) east of Carmen (North Cotabato).
The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 5 km.
The earthquake was felt in the following areas:
- Intensity IV - Matalam, North Cotabato
- Intensity III - Tacurong City; Marawi City; Kidapawan City; Cotabato City; Cagayan de Oro City
- Intensity II - Davao City; Valencia City; Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte
According to the Phivolcs bulletin, damage and aftershocks are expected.
True enough, a weaker earthquake at magnitude 4.3 was felt thirty minutes after in the same area, recorded at exactly 10:40:17 PM. It had a depth of 1 km and was tectonic in origin. No damage or aftershock is expected.
