Outgoing Cagayan de Oro Rep. Benjo Benaldo is now okay after being rushed to the hospital Thursday night due to gunshot wound in the chest.
According to reports, a gunshot was heard in his office and he was found bleeding by the staff that rushed to his room on the fifth floor of the Batasan Pambansa complex’s south wing.
Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said the congressman was talking to his wife, Brazilian model Daiana Menezes when the gunshot was heard. He was immediately brought to New Era General Hospital in Quezon City between 7 and 8 PM.
Belmonte also said that based on reports that reached him, Benaldo was “conscious and coherent” as he was being prepared for surgery.
Three weeks ago, the lawmaker got involved in a controversy that started from Instagram posts of Menezes. The model-actress posted controversial photos of her injured arm and other images that suggested violence on women.
The Brazilian has been inconsistent in denying and suggesting that she is a battered wife, but on June 14, Benaldo issued a statement that they have patched things up and everything is okay between them.
However, speculations still arose that the apparent suicide attempt of Benaldo was connected with the controversial Instagram posts of Menezes.
