Last year, ABS-CBN acquired the exclusive rights to 13 Mars Ravelo titles, among them was the most popular of the graphic novelist’s creations, Darna.
GMA-7, when they still had the rights to the title, did two television series out of it. The first was topbilled by Angel Locsin and the other was starred by Marian Rivera. The two series both sat high in the ratings during each of their times.
But ABS-CBN is not making a teleserye out of the title, now that they already have the right to it. Instead, they are making a Darna movie which will reportedly be starred by Kapuso network’s first Darna, Angel Locsin.
Angel is still at the peak of her showbiz career. When she shifted from being a Kapuso to become a Kapamilya in 2007, ABS-CBN was able to keep her on top of the game. Currently, she is one of the stars of the Saturday night sitcom, TODA Max.
Her last movie was Star Cinema’s Unofficially Yours that she topbilled together with John Lloyd Cruz. It is her highest-grossing movie to date.
It would be nice to see Angel portray Darna in the big screen. If it pushes through, she will be the first actress to portray the role both on television and on film.
And knowing the quality of Star Cinema movies, plus the marketing strategies they do to make their movies the most popular in the land, we are sure Darna will be a big success and will break box-office records in the process.
