“Extra Challenge” to end soon

GMA-7’s Extra Challenge will be axed soon.

Extra Challenge

After just about three months of airing, the original Pinoy reality show hosted by Marian Rivera and Richard Gutierrez will be put off air once again. And they reportedly had their last taping day last Monday.

Some speculate the show will be removed because of the issues involving GMA-7 and Sarah Lahbati, which in turn also involves Richard and his mom Annabelle Rama.

Annabelle owns the talent management company that Sarah signed a co-management contract with. The said contract violated the terms of her exclusive contract with GMA Network. Richard, on the other hand, is Sarah’s boyfriend and couldn’t help but show support for his girlfriend which means he had to go against the Kapuso Network.

But could it really be the reason for Extra Challenge’s sad fate?

Before the issue involving Sarah and GMA-7 blew out of proportion, it can be noted that Annabelle took to Twitter to say that Richard will soon be a freelancer, meaning he will no longer be tied with just GMA-7. No freelancer has ever given big roles in any shows of the Kapuso Network, much more as a host of its flagship reality show.

On the other hand, it’s also perhaps not all about Richard, who is not seen on any other television program as of the moment than the twice a week show and the Sunday variety Party Pilipinas.

Reason for the removal of Extra Challenge could also be because of Marian’s schedule. The Kapuso actress is seen weeknights as the lead actress in Temptation Of Wife. She also does Party Pilipinas every Sunday and soon, she will be doing a movie with Ai-Ai de las Alas under Viva Films.

But can’t the network just get replacement hosts to give way to their other talents? I believe Drew Arellano deserves bigger breaks. Even Chris Tiu will be a very good choice for the show.

Extra Challenge is such a good one to be put off air just because of the hosts. Richard and Marian are doing a great job and we must admit they have big fan bases, but personally I think It’s more of the show’s concept that makes people watch.

The show originally aired for seven years – 1999 to 2006 – hosted by Paolo Bediones and a succession of female co-hosts from Miriam Quiambao, Ethel Booba, Phoemela Barranda to Mariel Rodriguez. It’s an original reality show that we Pinoys can call our own.

It came back on air on October 27, 2012 hosted by Richard, Marian and comedian Boobay. We thought it’s going to last as long as its first run, but sadly, GMA-7 is putting it off-air again after just one season. Too bad.
