First Argentinian Pope Elected!

A new Roman Catholic Pope has been elected after Benedict XVI resigned last month.

On March 13, 2013, white smoke was seen billowing from the chimney above the Vatican Sistine Chapel, a sign that indicated the Cardinals have already selected a new Pope.

After more than an hour after the white smoke was seen, Pope Francis appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the crowd that has been chanting “Long live the Pope!” even before the identity of the newly-elected leader of the Roman Catholic church has been revealed.

Pope Francis I is a 76-year-old Argentinian who entered the Vatican as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio. Being elected Pope means that he got at least 2/3 of the votes of the 115 Cardinals that were present.

His first address included telling the crowd that he was the first pope elected from the developing world. He was the first Latin American and the first Jesuit pope as well.

He is now the leader of approximately 1.2 billion Roman Catholics worldwide.
