Julia Barretto’s launching project is cancelled.
Cofradia, the supposed first series that will launch the career of the new Star Magic talent, has already been put off. According to reports, ABS-CBN didn’t want any issues with racism that’s why the network decided not to continue with the project.
Last May, Julia was formally announced as the lead star of Cofradia, a 1953 movie based on a novel by Dominador Ad Castillo.
The story is about a young lady who is afraid to fall in love because of her very dark skin. Because of her good heart, however, she will transform to become beautiful and light-skinned with the help of a magic candle.
The story actually gives out the idea that being dark-skinned is ugly and being fair-skinned is beautiful, in country inhabited by brown-skinned people.
It really doesn’t sound good when today, even the television commercials for whitening products are being criticized.
It’s just too bad, though, because the news about Julia doing Cofradia has been around even before she was launched as one of the Star Magic Circle 2013 talents.
As of the moment, ABS-CBN is reportedly conceptualizing a new series that would be tailor-made for the young actress.
Meanwhile, reports that Cofradia was cancelled because Julia’s Maalaala Mo Kaya episode did poorly in the ratings was somehow not believable. The episode actually posted 35.6% national rating and was the most-watched television program for that day.
