Rocco Nacino has been picked to replace JM De Guzman as the lead star of the movie San Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir.
Mell Navarro, the movie’s associate producer, revealed the news through a Facebook post on Saturday, saying: “Yes, Kapuso actor Rocco is confirmed to portray the much-coveted role of San Pedro Calungsod replacing JM.”
JM’s father withdrew the actor from starring in the movie earlier this week. He said that his son has some health concerns that he needs to attend to. JM is rumored to be suffering from depression, which led to substance abuse, after breaking up with actress Jessy Mendiola.
Meanwhile, Rocco is not new to playing the role of Pedro Calungsod, the second Filipino to become saint, as he portrayed the role last year in a GMA News TV “docudrama.”
Pep.ph has interviewed the movie’s writer and director Francis Villacorta who revealed their reasons for picking Rocco.
“Aside from JM, si Rocco kasi, based on the physical traits, hindi nalalayo kay San Pedro among our actors sa generation nila,” he said. “Pinoy looks, tama lang ang height, can act, and nakatulong din sa weight ng decision ‘yung pag-portray niya ng Pedro Calungsod in television last year.”
He also added that the saint could have intervened because the role is really meant for Rocco.
“Naniniwala akong given the right motivation, passion, and understanding of the character of Calungsod, Rocco can play the role well, with justice. After all, baka it’s God’s will talaga na mapunta sa kanya ang role, through the intercession of San Pedro Calungsod.”
San Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir is an official entry to the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) happening this December.
