Lolong, the crocodile that made us proud for getting the record of being the world’s largest croc in captivity, has passed away.
The news was confirmed by Edwin Elorde, mayor of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, the province where Lolong is held captive in a zoo. According to reports, the croc died on February 10, 2013 at exactly 8:05 PM.
Could he have died of improper “caring”? That, we can only speculate about.
Lolong was captured by villagers on September 3, 2011. They had to trap him because he was being blamed for a fisherman’s disappearance a couple of months prior. He was also seen killing a carabao.
The crocodile was measured in November 2011 by National Geographic’s Dr. Adam Britton, a well-known crocodile expert. On July 2, 2012, the local government of Bunawan received the official certification from Guinness that Lolong was indeed the biggest croc in captivity at 6.17 meters.
With Lolong’s death, I guess the title of being the biggest croc will go back to the 5.48-meter Cassius Clay of Australia. Unless someone somewhere has already captured a bigger croc, that is.
