Gary Valenciano reacted to the issue that The X Factor Philippines was wrong in not letting Zendee Tenerefe go through when she auditioned in the said ABS-CBN singing reality show.
“You know what let’s look at that again. Let’s look at her audition piece. Because honestly I would have remembered,” said Gary, who was one of the four judges in the first season of the local X Factor.
Gary said that perhaps, Zendee wasn’t as impressive as the others who auditioned that time, because if she was, “I would have even added her to AKA JAM.”
“Maybe the song that she did wasn’t as impressive as what she did to get her into where she is now. Iba ibang vehicles ‘yan e. Ang sinakyan n’ya siguro sa X Factor ay jeep, pero ‘yong sinakyan n’yang bus for whatever ‘yon ang talagang, you know, made her gain the popularity.”
“X Factor is just a stepping stone. So even after X Factor, even if you don’t make it, you still become more popular than even the winner.”
And to the critics who bash the show for not letting Zendee go though: “I would love for people, the same critics, to sit down with me and watch, and then compare her with all the others who also auditioned on that particular time and tell me straightforward is she deserving to go through.”
Zendee’s life story was featured last night in the first episode of GMA-7’s Magpakailanman comeback. Although they didn’t name the TV program that Zendee auditioned in and got rejected, people knew it was The X Factor Philippines due to YouTube videos of her audition that surfaced on the internet when she became a YouTube sensation.
She became popular when someone took a video of her singing And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going using a demo videoke in SM Megamall and uploaded it on YouTube. She was eventually seen in Party Pilipinas and very recently in The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
And since Ellen paved the way to another YouTube sensation Charice’s international fame, Zendee was almost instantly compared to her.
But does Gary think it’s right to compare the two? “No, I don’t think so,” he said. “But I’ll tell you, if Zendee becomes truly big, I’m giving her three, four months and then she’ll be compared to somebody else and then some sort of intrigue will happen again.”
“I’m hoping that whoever is in the same boat that Charice was in, will accomplish exactly what Charice has accomplished because Charice is still accomplishing a lot now, we just don’t know it.”
Gary also hopes Zendee becomes big. “I’m hoping that a lot more comes her way,” he said. “I hope that she takes the world by storm.”
