The Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight, the much-anticipated match in the boxing world, has been long overdue. And to those who are hopeful it might still happen, Showtime Executive Vice-President Stephen Espinoza said it will definitely take place but with one condition: the Filipino boxing champ will have to ditch Top Rank Promotions and Bob Arum altogether.
Espinoza said Mayweather wants the fight, but it’s the American boxer’s issues with Bob Arum that’s the problem. He doesn’t want anything to do with Top Rank ever again.
“Until Manny Pacquiao changes his promotional representation, I’m not optimistic that it (the fight) can happen,” Espinoza told The Telegraph.
Mayweather has left Arum early in his career and vowed to never work with him again. But if Pacquiao would change his promoter, Espinoza is certain the fight will push through.
The big question is, will Pacquiao leave Bob Arum just to have the fight? Or is Mayweather just using his conflicts with Top Rank to avoid fighting the Pinoy icon?
Meanwhile, Mayweather, who recently signed a six-fight contract with Showtime, is set to return to the ring May 2014. Pacquiao, on the other hand, will have his next fight either April or May.
