Likhaang Rabaraba presents Sarong Aldaw, a short film by Marianito Dio Jr. for the Cinemalaya Film Festival 2012’s New Breed Short Film category.
“Sarong aldaw” means “one day” in Bicolano, so I guess it’s safe to say that the short film was shot somewhere in Bicolandia.
The teaser-trailer starts with a voice saying “Gusto ko mag-adal sa Maynila” (“I want to study in Manila”). A stringed instrument can be heard thereafter, playing a type of music that will remind you of the province and folk songs.
The short is about an old lonely farmer whose wife died upon giving birth to their son. The son has his mother’s gift for words and because of poverty and his father’s loneliness, he decides to go to continue searching for his luck in Manila. The father is hesitant to allow his son to leave, but in the end will also give in to his son’s plans.
Cinemalaya 2012 runs from July 20 to July 29 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines as well as the Ayala Cinemas in Greenbelt and TriNoma.
