Cinemalaya Film Festival's 12th year at Ayala Malls Cinemas

The country’s annual Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival celebrates its 12th year with a resonant theme “Break the Surface” featuring an impressive roster of films for full length and short feature categories that are currently showing at Ayala Malls Cinemas.

For the first time, Ayala Malls Cinemas brings the festival outside Metro Manila at Ayala Center Cebu that will run on August 9 -14.  Marking its first opening at Ayala Center Cebu, Cinemalaya will have its opening night on August 9 featuring “Dagsin” and “Lando at Bugoy.”

Now on its sixth year partnership with Cinemalaya Foundation, Ayala Malls Cinemas has again championed the works of the country’s talented filmmakers showcasing the festival’s entries in seven of their branches (runs from August 6 – 14 in Metro Manila and August 9-14 in Cebu) – Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 1, Fairview Terraces, U.P. Town Center, Solenad and Ayala Center Cebu.

Currently playing exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas, this year’s Cinemalaya nine (9) entries for the Full Feature category include “Ang Bagong Pamilya ni Ponching,” directed by Inna Miren Salazar and Dos Ocampo starring Janus Del Prado and Ketchup Eusebio; “Dagsin,” directed by Renato Ignacio Magadia, Jr. starring  Janine Gutierrez, Lotlot De Leon and Tommy Abuel; “Hiblang Abo,” directed by Ralston Jover, starring Lou Veloso and Jun Urbano; “I America” by Ivan Andrew Payawal stars Bela Padilla; “Kusina” by directors Cenon Obispo Palomares and David R. Corpuz stars Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo;  “Lando at Bugoy” directed by Victor Acedillo Jr. starring Allen Dizon and Gold Azeron; “Mercury is Mine” directed by Jason Paul Laxamana starring Pokwang and Bret Jackson; “Pamilya Ordinaryo” directed by Eduardo Roy, Jr. starring Ronwaldo Martin, Hasmine Killip and Maria Isabel Lopez and “Tuos” by Roderick Cabrido starring Nora Aunor and Barbie Forteza.

For the Short Feature category, entries include “Ang Maangas, Ang Marikit at Ang Makata,” “Bugtaw,” “Mansyong Papel,” “Nakauwi Na,” “Pektus,” “Ang Hapon nin Nanding,” “Butas,” “Fish Out of Water,” “Get Certified” and “Forever Natin.”

'Tuos' starring Nora Aunor, Barbie Forteza - Poster and Trailer

"Tuos" is one of the main entries in the upcoming 12th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival (2016) directed by Derick Cabrido. The movie stars Nora Aunor and Barbie Forteza, along with Ron Martin (Coco Martin's younger brother), Flor Salanga, Elora Espano, and Ronnie Martinez.


Plot Outline:
Pina-ilog is chosen to be their village’s “Binukot”, a maiden chosen to be the fairest amongst the women in her village, confined inside her house, never allowed to go outside. She is chosen to keep the oral tradition alive, memorizing the chants and performing it. She is to pass the title and responsibility to her granddaughter Dowokan. When sanctity of the “tuos” becomes threatened, putting Dowokan in danger, Pina-ilog realized that she cannot just stand aside. Pina-ilog finds herself coming face to face, literally, with the ghosts of a tradition, which shackled her into a life of solitary confinement.

Nova Villa, Freddie Webb in '1st Ko Si 3rd,' opens Nov. 12 at Ayala Cinemas

“1st Ko si 3rd” made its debut in this year’s Cinemalaya X’s and has generated most of the “feels” amongst all the entries in the New Breed category.   Before heading to compete at the prestigious Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), “1st Ko si 3rd” is going to be shown in (Phils.) theaters nationwide exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas starting November 12.

“1st Ko si 3rd” is about Corazon (played by Nova Villa), a recently retired government employee who's been married to Alejandro (Dante Rivero) for the past four decades.  But their monotonous marriage is about to change when Corazon and Third (Freddie Webb), her first love, crosses path once again after their abrupt separation in the past.  Initially avoiding the opportunities to meet up with Third, Corazon finally finds herself rekindling old feelings and living each moment with the first love of her life.

Cinemalaya 2014 winners - Nora Aunor wins 1st Cinemalaya Best Actress

Nora Aunor won Best Actress at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2014 for her role in Hustisya. The film also won the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award and was declared the top-grossing entry in the Directors Showcase category. It was Nora's first Cinemalaya award.

Cinemalaya's 10th anniversary feature films at Ayala's Fairview Terraces

Ayala Malls Cinemas continues to celebrate with the nation as Cinemalaya’s 10th Anniversary recently opened (August 2) at their latest digital screen at Fairview Terraces.

The latest satellite venue of the festival which is Ayala’s Fairview Terraces in Quezon City hosted an opening night featuring Separados, a romantic comedy drama by GB Sampedro starring Alfred Vargas, Anjo Yllana, Jason AbalosVictor Neri, Ricky Davao and Erik Santos.  Inspired by true events, Separados is about  the bittersweet saga of six men who separated from their wives.

Cinemalaya 2013 - Winners list

Winners of the ongoing Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2013 were announced Sunday night, August 4, 2013, at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Vilma Santos was Best Actress for her role in Ekstra. Other mainstream actors that won top awards include TJ Trinidad (Best Supporting Actor), Irma Idlawan (Best Actress), and Jasmine Curtis-Smith (Best Supporting Actress).

‘Debosyon’ starring Paulo Avelino, full trailer released (Video)

Paulo Avelino stars in Debosyon, an entry to the 2013 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival’s New Breed Category.

Debosyon is about a young man (Paulo) who gets lost and injures himself in the middle of the forest. When he wakes up, he hears a woman (Mara Lopez) singing. He follows the voice and meets the mysterious girl who will take care of his injury and will nurse him back to health.

Alessandra de Rossi stars in the upcoming Korean movie, The Mango Tree, directed by Lee Soo-Sung.

The movie, a romantic-comedy, was shot in Cebu. It is about a Korean boy, played by Seo Ji-Seok, who fell in love with a Filipina, played Alessandra.

Cinemalaya Indie Film Fest 2013 - List of entries

The 9th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival (2013) happens from July 26 to August 4, 2013 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Trinoma, Alabang Town Center, and Greenbelt cinemas.

Fifteen films made it to the festival, ten of which are under the New Breed category and the other ten under the Directors Showcase category.

‘Ekstra’ starring Vilma Santos - New trailer released! (Video)

The trailer for Ekstra starring Vilma Santos has been released a few days back and I must say the Star For All Seasons still has it. Her acting, as shown in the 1:48 long video, is impeccable and I can’t wait to see the full movie.

Gov. Vilma Santos topbills the indie film Ekstra, an official entry to the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival under the Directors Showcase category.

Along with Ate Vi, other stars in the movie include Marian Rivera, Cherie Gil and Piolo Pascual. It is under the direction of Jeffrey Jeturian, produced by Quantum Films.

“Bwakaw” to be released commercially by Star Cinema beginning September 5 (Trailer)

Bwakaw, the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2012 Director’s Showcase entry by Jun Lana, will be released commercially by Star Cinema beginning September 5.

The movie is about an old gay man (Eddie Garcia) and how a stray dog named Bwakaw taught him how to live life without fear.
