Jonathan Yabut, the very first winner of The Apprentice Asia, said Pinoys have an advantage when it comes to competitions like what the show offers.
In Umagang Kay Ganda on Friday, he said that Filipinos are born aggressive and don’t give up easily, some of the traits that made him win the reality competition.
“I think if you’re a Pinoy, meron ka na agad inherent advantage, and that is palaban meaning whatever happens, lalaban at lalaban ka down till the death,” he said. “And number two madiskarte ang Pinoy. Kahit wala kang makitang solusyon, merong solusyon ‘yan in the end. So most of the contestants would easily give, but for a Filipino he would find a way. He would cross the street, get out of the room, look for someone to help you out for a solution.”
As the winner, Jonathan gets a US$100,000 year-long contract as apprentice of Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandez, who owns AirAsia and the Tune Hotels chain. However, it’s not the money that’s important to him.
“Para sa akin it’s not even the salary, e, it’s about ‘yung mga networks na makukuha mo, the other businessmen that you can actually get to know because of him, and the mentorship na ibibigay sa inyo ni Mr. Tony Fernandes, ‘yung mapag-aaralan mo because he himself climbed his way all the way up from being an accountant to a CEO and finally having his own business, having his own airplanes, having his own chain of hotels,” he said.
He is set to fly to Kuala Lumpur next week as his first day of work starts August 15th. He will be AirAsia’s chief of staff, reporting directly to Tony Fernandes.
When asked what values he will be taking with him on his road to success, Jonathan imparted some words of wisdom.
“I think isayad lang lagi ang paa sa lupa. If alam mo kung saan ka nanggaling, maa-appreciate mo lahat ng bagay lalo na kahit mawala pa s’ya, alam mo kung saan ka nanggaling. So maa-appreciate mo at yumaman ka man or maging mahirap ulit, hindi na s’ya problema sa ‘yo kasi alam mo ‘yung paghihirap na pinagdaanan mo,” he said.
He worked for a multinational company before he joined The Apprentice Asia. He was a graduate of the University of the Philippines and was a consistent scholar during elementary and high school.
