Gilas Pilipinas wins against Qatar in 27th FIBA Asia Championship

Gilas Pilipinas gave Qatar their first loss in the 27th FIBA Asia Championship on Tuesday night.

The game ended with a score of 80-70 in favor of the Philippine national basketball team, with Marcus Douthit as the top scorer with 19 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Japeth Aguilar with 14 points.

Gilas posted the biggest lead during the second quarter with 20 points. During the half time, however, the lead went down to two points, 47-49.

Qatar tried their best to win the game and protect their straight win record. As the game got intense, however, Douthit got injured during the third quarter. Gilas needed him, though, that’s why coach Chot Reyes let him play again despite his injury to defend the team’s lead.

Meanwhile, less than a minute left in the game, the referees counted Qatar’s Mansour Elhadary’s shot even after a whistle has been blown.

Gilas’ team manager said they signed the scoresheet to signify protest but they are still discussing if they are going to pursue a formal protest against the officials.

On Wednesday, Gilas is set to face Hong Kong while Qatar will go against the undefeated Chinese Taipei. The Philippines still has a chance to be on top of Group E if they win against Hong Kong and if Qatar will also win against Chinese Taipei.
