Chinese fishing boat caught at Tubbataha Reef

After the United States minesweeper USS Guardian ran aground and damaged thousands of square feet of Tubbataha Reef three months ago, a new intruder, this time a Chinese fishing boat, ran aground the said reef on Monday night, April 8, 2013.

The Chinese boat was found 1.1 nautical miles east of Tubbataha Reef’s ranger station before midnight of Monday.

Believed to be poachers, the 12 people aboard the boat are now being interrogated by the protected marine site’s officials.

Tubbataha Reef is off-limits to any form of navigation. It is a protected marine sanctuary nominated at the New 7 Wonders of Nature, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1992, and considered as the best dive site in the Philippines.
