Cherie Gil cried while apologizing to Vice Ganda after the latter’s performance in “It’s Showtime’s” Magpasikat Week.
The veteran actress, who was sitting as one of the judges for the noontime show hosts’ anniversary showdown, had at one time bashed Vice for the rape joke he did on Jessica Soho in one of his concerts.
“I’d like to personally apologize to you because I know that at some point in the past I have reacted to one of your stand up stints which maybe perhaps have been written by someone else and I didn’t take that into consideration at that time,” Cherie said on live television.
She admitted that she got a lot of negative reaction from netizens for criticizing Vice, saying she “got a lot of hate tweets for that.”
Vice sang a song he personally wrote for the performance. The lyrics talked about equality and how people should not judge one another.
“At the end of the day it all comes down to getting to know the person better and understanding every story that each person goes through,” Cherie added. “Today I saw your authenticity, your honesty, and the same place I think I find myself in right now is questioning, after 35 years in this business, what I can leave behind aside from my famous line in the movie. It is not the image but the message we give to inspire people.”
She also thanked Vice for letting her know him better through the song.
“Thank you Vice Ganda, so much, for letting me get to know you today in the deepest, most real sense in your most honest being and for letting me get to know you, you, as a person through that song,” she said.
Cherie also commended the bravery of the children, all with different kinds of disabilities, that Vice performed with on stage.
“All these children on stage are so brave for showing us that they are fighters and survivors. What a beautiful day, thank you so much.”
