After National University’s (NU) first win in 60 years in UAAP (University Athletics Association of the Philippines) basketball recently, point guard Gelo Alolino vows to defend their title next year.
“As what our coach said, we hope that NU becomes known as a new basketball dynasty. We will try to defend our crown and even top our performance this year,” says Alolino in “Tapatan Ni Tunying” airing this Thursday (October 23).
Alolino also shares in the “Tapatan Ni Tunying” episode their team’s difficulties this year that even made the success for the NU community sweeter.
“We lost four of our ‘starting five’ players last year. I was the only one left. We have six or seven rookies,” he shares.
“Before I joined the team, I already knew the mindset of the people that NU’s a loser. It seemed they treated us like cellar-dwellers. Finally, after 60 years, that has changed,” he adds.
Meanwhile, Mac Belo of Far Eastern University, NU’s opponent in this year UAAP Basketball finals, also promises to make a comeback in the next season’s tourney.
“We will return with vengeance. Maybe we can use our experience at the recent finals in the next season. We need more discipline, hardwork, and practice,” Belo says.
Belo, a son of a farmer from Cotabato, shares how important basketball and education are for him.
