Two UPLB students found decaying in Mt. Makiling trail

Two students of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) were found dead on Thursday, December 6.

Identified as Kevin Lagadon, a third year computer science student, and Mark Lorenz Valdez, a third year nutrition student, the two died of accidental drowning, according to Los Baños police.

Their bodies, which were already in the “advance stage of decomposition” were found along the hiking trail of Mt. Makiling inside the UPLB campus.

The autopsy reports on the bodies showed that they died of asphyxia by drowning, ruling out the possibilities that they were victims of fraternity hazing. Although it gave the impression that they were physically assaulted, the discoloration seen were due to the bodies already decaying. They didn’t even have external wounds.

The two 18-year-olds had been missing since Sunday, the day they went for a hike up Mt. Makiling. Security logbook, which serves as registration for those wanting to hike the mountain, said they went to Flatrocks, a quite famous boulder and stream near the mountain trail.

A group of local residents going for a swim found their bodies near the said stream on Thursday afternoon. Lagadon was identified through the pair of shorts he was wearing, while Valdez was identified by his family by a shirt and towel found on the scene.

Reports said that one of them could have had trouble swimming in the 11-foot stream and the other tried to help him, resulting in the two of them drowning.

The remains of Valdez will be brought to his home in Muntinlupa City, and Lagadon to his family in Caloocan City.
