A left hook to Arce’s chin sent the Mexican sprawling, ending the fight at 2:59 of the third round.

The win was Donaire’s 30th in a row and it retained his title as the World Boxing Organization’s super bantamweight champion.

It brought cheer to Pinoy boxing fans who were quite sad when Manny Pacquiao lost to Juan Manuel Marquez, also a Mexican, last week in Las Vegas.

“I went out and pretty much timed him,” the 30-year-old Donaire said in an interview after the fight. “We wanted to slow him down and get him thinking he could get in there. We knew he would open up.”

Meanwhile, Arce revealed that he promised his family he would quit boxing if he lost this one. “My career is over,” said the 33-year-old boxer. “I’m leaving after losing to the best man. He is very good. He has power. He can finish the fight at any moment. I promised my family if I lost I would leave. I retire to go home and watch the fights on TV.”

Congratulations, Nonito Donaire! May you continue making the country proud.
