Nonito Donaire was named “Fighter of the Year” by ESPN.
Nicknamed “The Filipino Flash,” he moved up to junior featherweight this year and won four of his fights.
Nonito’s last fight gave Pinoys that much-needed boost after Manny Pacquiao’s loss a week before that. Nonito knocked out his opponent Jorge Arce in third round, proving that boxing is still dominated by Pinoys.
He was also cited for his anti-performance-enhancing drugs stance, allowing Voluntary Anti-Doping Association to test him for steroids anytime.
The Pinoy boxer beat fellow Pinoy Brian Viloria to the title of “Fighter of the Year,” along world-famous fighters Carl Froch, Danny Garcia, Juan Manuel Marquez, Leo Santa Cruz, Juan Manuel Marquez and last year’s title holder Andre Ward.
