The full trailer for ABS-CBN’s upcoming series Juan Dela Cruz has been released. It stars Coco Martin as Juan, a “tagabantay” who is destined to battle forces of evil.
Juan, however, is half “tagabantay” and half-“aswang” but he was brought up by a priest so he has both the morals of a Christian and the physical strength of an “aswang.”
(The half-human and half-aswang thing reminds me of Mona Louise Rey’s character in GMA-7’s Aso Ni San Roque but, of course, Coco doesn’t have a dog side kick here and Mona Louise doesn’t do stunts in the other.)
Juan lost the Holy Cross (the weapon of the “tagabantay”) when he was a child. He finally gets reunited with it years later. The Holy Cross shifts into different kinds of weapons depending on what is needed – Pana ng Karunungan, Latigo ng Katarungan, Sibat ng Kagitingan and Espada ng Katapangan.
Coco’s character has a touch of comedy, and “Yun, o!” will surely be a popular catchphrase once the series airs.
Erich Gonzales is also in Juan Dela Cruz, as well as Gina Pareño, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Albert Martinez, Mylene Dizon, Louise Abuel, Jaime Fabregas, Izzy Canillo and Neil Coleta. It is directed by Malu Sevilla.
