Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon did a very good job at the Miss Universe 2012 pageant held at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 19, 2012. The pageant was aired via satellite in Manila by ABS-CBN morning of December 20th.
Janine was declared the runner-up to Miss USA Olivia Culpo who succeeded Angola’s Leila Lopes to the crown.
The 23-year-old Filipina impressed the judges and the crowd with her cobra walk that exuded confidence and femininity. But what was really impressive was her composure during the final interview.
She picked the name of judge Nigel Barker to ask her the Twitter question that was picked from those who joined the #askmissuniverse campaign on the microblogging site.
The question read: “As an international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English should be a pre-requisite to being Miss Universe? Why or why not?”
Janine answered it with finesse and no nervousness can be traced in her voice. She said, “For me being Miss Universe is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. It’s being able to influence and inspire other people. So whatever language you have, as long as your heart is to serve and you have a strong mind to show to people, then you can be Miss Universe. Thank you.”
The crowd in the venue went wild, Janine actually had to pause in the middle of talking to smile because of the loud cheer she got. We thought, though, that she would be crowned Miss Universe because she gave the most brilliant answer from the Top 5. But I guess, Miss USA, who talked about regretting picking on her siblings, gave a more “qualified” as per Miss Universe’s taste because she included her “family” in her answer.
