According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was recorded at exactly 3:27 PM local time (9:27 UTC). The epicenter was traced 619 km (384 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia.
It followed the earlier magnitude-8.6 quake that struck the same area at 2:38 PM local time (8:38 UTC).
Tsunami warning has been issued for the whole Indian Ocean and a tsunami watch is in effect.
