In a message posted on the movie's Facebook Page, producer Fernando Ortigas and screenwriter-producer Eduardo A. Rocha also thanked those who made it possible for the movie to earn as much.
Although they still need P40 million more to break even, "it doesn't diminish one bit our ability to appreciate everyone's ongoing patronage and support."
"Heneral Luna" opened to 101 cinemas on September 9, 2015. It got very good reviews from moviegoers, which included celebrities who even expressed their desires to work in such film projects.
When the number of cinemas was reduced after a week of showing, an online clamor arose, saying the movie needed to be exhibited a little longer so that more Filipinos can watch it.
Some even reportedly called movie houses asking to bring back the biopic.
All these efforts were not put to waste. From being reduced to 40 cinemas, the number increased to about 70 around the third week.
Social media indeed played a big role for the success of the Jerrold Tarog movie. Good reviews indeed go a long way.
To add to its success, "Heneral Luna" was chosen as the country's official entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2016 Oscars.
