Magnitude-7.7 earthquake rocks Eastern Samar

Eastern Samar was rocked by a  magnitude-7.7 earthquake on Friday night, August 31, 2012.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded the earthquake at 8:47 PM. The epicenter was traced 112 km southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It was tectonic in origin and has a depth of 10 km.

It was felt in Davao, Cebu, Surigao, Tacloban and Bacolod. Aftershocks has also been recorded.

A tsunami alert level 3 (immediate evacuation) has been issued for Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

Meanwhile, USGS recorded the earthquake at magnitude-7.6 with epicenter at 94 km east of Sulangan, Eastern Samar. It has a depth of 34.9 km, according to USGS.
