Brothers Phil and James Younghusband were recently informed by coach Hans Michael Weiss that they are not included in the national team roster for the Philippine Football Peace Cup, a mini-tournament organized by the Philippine Football Federation.
The reason behind being left off, however, wasn’t stated by the coach. Even the brothers’ manager, Cathy Rivilla, confessed to having no idea why Phil and James weren’t included in the tournament.
To make matters worse, the Younghusbands learned about the disappointing news through a text message from the coach.
Weiss texted James the following message: “James sorry for not being able to talk to you personally… so I have to inform you per text that Phil and you are not included in the list for the Peace Cup… anything else after remains to be seen… take care and all the best! MW”
Rivilla said that James and Phil have always been committed to the Azkals. They go to practice and only missing an event due to a short notice. It was the visit to Malacañang where the Azkals presented football gear to the president after they were named peace ambassadors.
The joint message from Phil and James read:
“We remain 100 percent committed to the national team. We do not know what transpired, as we have been in constant talks with Coach Weiss. But we respect whatever decision management has. We will be available for whatever call up.”
The Younghusbands are two of the better players of the Azkals, not to mention they are also among the most popular. With their exclusion from the Peace Cup which makes their future with the Azkals now undetermined, I wonder how will the fans of Philippine football take it.
The name Azkals, after all, is in more ways than one associated with the name Younghusband.
