They are in full support of their 16-year-old daughter’s relationship with 60-year-old singer Freddie Aguilar, but the girl’s parents said it hurts them to hear people say they’re doing it just for the money.
"Ang tingin ng mga tao sa amin, mukhang pera kami. Na kaya ang anak namin ay nandoon dahil as pera," the 16-year-old's mother, Aling Violeta, told Buzz Ng Bayan. "Hindi namin hinahangad ang pera. Parang insulto na rin sa kahirapan namin. Masakit po. Ayaw ko ng ganitong buhay."
But the mother said she did not approve of the May-December relationship at first.
"Ang tagal naming pinag-usapan 'yan. Pinagka-galitan pa naming mag-ina yan. Talagang pinagtatalunan namin," she said.
She, however, changed her mind because she saw how Ka Freddie means a lot to her daughter. She was also worried that the teenager would rebel had they continued to go against the relationship.
"Hindi ko na rin mapigilan. Kung pipigilan mo, lalo pong magwawala 'yan eh. Baka mas mapariwara ang buhay. Kaya sabi ko, kung ano ang gusto niya, 'sige, suportahan na lang kita," the mother said.
She was glad, though, that she saw positive changes in her daughter when they stopped going against the affair.
"Malaki po ang pinagbago," she said, pertaining to her daughter, adding that she is happy with the change. "Mas mature na siya, mas may paggalang na siya sa amin ngayon."
But the public's reaction to the controversial relationship was a little too much for them.
"Kinukutya kami ng kapwa tao," said Mang Joel, the teenager's father. "Ano ba kasi kaso ng anak ko sa gobyerno? Nangutang ba ang anak ko sa gobyerno?"
But despite the negative reaction of the public, their support will not waver."
"Tibayan nila ang pagsasama nila," Aling Violeta said. "Pakita nila sa buong mundo na talagang nagmamahalan sila."
