Gerald, Piolo’s ‘On The Job’ only earns P11.7M in 2 weeks

It’s such a sad news when something critically-acclaimed doesn’t get patronized. Just like the On The Job movie starring Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson, which reportedly only made P11,727,906 in its 2-week run.

It got a standing ovation during its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight last May. It won the Jury’s Choice prize and got Joel Torre a Best Actor award at the 2013 Puchon International Fantastic (PiFan) Film Festival in South Korea.

It will also be released in North America, France and Australia, and an American adaptation is said to be in the works, directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband, 2 Guns).

But with the P11.7 million On The Job made in its Philippine run, it only ranked 9th among the Filipino movies that was shown this year.

Top 3 in the list of highest-grosser this year are It Takes A Man And A Woman with P375 million, Four Sisters And A Wedding with P145 million, and Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo? with P102.3 million. And it’s interesting to note that all 3 movies were starred by women romantically linked to Gerald in the past - Sarah Geronimo, Bea Alonzo, and Kim Chiu respectively.

Meanwhile, are Pinoys really not yet ready for serious films like OTJ? Or do we just like watching feel good movies to forget, even if temporary, the third world-level burdens we face everyday?
