Diana Zubiri won her first-ever acting award from the Young Critics Circle on June 27 in UP Diliman.
She won Best Performance by Male or Female, Adult or Child, Individual or Ensemble in Leading or Supporting Role for her performance in the independent film Bahay Bata.
Her role was that of a nurse in a public maternity hospital in the movie helmed by Eduardo Roy, Jr. She bested other nominees like Arthur Acuña, Fides Cuyugan-Asensio and Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino (Niño), Tirso Cruz III, Raquel Villavicencio, Jennifer Sevilla and Edgar Allan Guzman (Bisperas), Vincent Sandoval (Señorita) and Alfred Vargas (Teoriya).
Diana gave a hilarious speech, revealing that her motivation in joining showbiz was to be able to buy a camera phone for herself. Audience roared with laughter when the actress said the only other award she got was from the mayor of Mandaluyong when she did that pictorial for FHM PH magazine.
“Noong nasa showbiz na po ako, naalala ko na ang award lang na nakuha ko noon eh noong na-award ako ni Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos noong nagkaroon po ako ng kaso,” she recalled. “Kung naaalala nyo po yung kasong kinasangkutan ko noon dahil sa indecent exposure noong nag-pictorial po ako para po sa FHM.”
Diana is currently studying Theater Arts at Miriam College. She said that the acting award inspired her to do more good films and accept more acting awards in the future.
