Eastern Samar was shook by a magnitude-5.9 earthquake on Tuesday evening, January 17, 2012.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded the earthquake at 8:55 PM. The epicenter was traced to 55 kilometers northeast of Mercedes in Eastern Samar.
It was felt at:
- Intensity V- Salcedo, Borongan and Guiuan, Eastern Samar
- Intensity IV- Tacloban, Palo and Tolosa, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; Dolores and San Policarpo, Eastern Samar
- Intensity III- St. Bernard and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; Catarman, Northern Samar
- Intensity II- Naval, Biliran
- Intensity I- Cebu City
Damage is expected and aftershocks are possible.
The earthquake was recorded by USGS at magnitude-5.7 with the following estimated locations:
- 19 km (11 miles) NE of Guiuan, Samar, Philippines
- 93 km (57 miles) E of Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines
- 156 km (96 miles) NNE of Surigao, Mindanao, Philippines
- 652 km (405 miles) SE of MANILA, Philippines
Earlier, a magnitude-5.1 earthquake was felt in Davao del Sur at exactly 6 PM. Phivolcs reported its epicenter at 29 kilometers northeast of Don Marcelino. The same earthquake was recorded by USGS at magnitude-5.
