My friend and I headed to Lucban, Quezon yesterday at 3:00 AM for the famous Pahiyas Festival. It is an annual celebration of the Lucbanons in honor of their patron saint, San Isidro Labrador.
They celebrate it by decorating their houses with agricultural products and kiping (leaf-shaped, edible decoration made of rice). Not all houses decorate, though. There’s only a designated Pahiyas route that changes every year. I was told decorating houses that grand could cost a fortune that’s why it’s not advisable for a homeowner to do it every year, thus the annual route change.
The streets were packed with local and some foreign tourists. Everyone wanted to have their pictures taken with the colorful houses, some even go inside the houses, look out the window and have their shots taken.
It was quite tiring to walk the entire Pahiyas route but it was all worth it. After all, it’s not everyday that you see such colorful display.
We also got to experience eating the town’s famous pancit habhab without fork. Habhab, after all, means to eat directly with your mouth (much like what animals do). The ice-cold buko shake also tasted like heaven after being out in the sun for almost four hours.
