Manny Pangilinan confirmed the rumors that he indeed wants to buy GMA-7.
The chairman of TV5 and PLDT said that he began talking with the management of the Kapuso as early as 2002, followed by another talk five years ago. The talks, though, were very preliminary.
The rumor about Pangilinan buying GMA-7 came out December 2011. He allegedly offered a mind-boggling deal to acquire the network and the deal was allegedly 2/3 done.
GMA-7’s Felipe Gozon, however, denied it by saying that it was “a very wild rumor.”
"Kung P500 billion, ibebenta ko right now," Gozon said. "Kung may mag-o-offer ng P500 billion, kahit tulog ako, gisingin n‘yo ko, I will sell. Pag below that, medyo iisipin ko muna."
GMA-7 also released a statement last December regarding the issue saying that there was no negotiation going on between the network and Pangilinan.
"There is no truth to the rumor going around in social media sites and the internet that Mr. Manny Pangilinan has bought GMA Network. In fact, there is no negotiation going on between GMA and Mr. Pangilinan regarding the latter’s acquisition of GMA-7."
Pangilinan assured, though, that TV5 wouldn’t be neglected if ever the deal pushes through.
"What we want to hold sacred are the initial batch of people who joined when we're just starting," he said. "We're not abandoning them for another TV network we're investing in. They need not worry."
