The UP Pep Squad won the 2012 UAAP Cheerdance Competition (CDC 2012) held on September 22 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
It was the third consecutive year that the UP Pep Squad won the title. No one can complain that their freedom-themed performance was indeed the best among the seven universities that competed. They got Php340,000 and a Samsung Galaxy Pocket cellphones for each of the team member.
First runner-up went to Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad with their jungle-themed routine, while second runner-up was the National University (NU) Pep Squad that did a fairytale-themed performance. The runners-up got Php200,000 and Php140,000 respectively.
It was the NU Pep Squad’s first time in the Top 3 of the UAAP CDC. Others were questioning their placement as 2nd runner-up but that was the decision of the judges and it was their job to choose the winner and the runners-up. I guess NU’s placement only became sensationalized because they are the UAAP host this year.
The Group Stunts Competition was also held after the CDC and the winners were the same. Champion was UP Pep Squad, 1st runner-up was FEU Cheering Squad, and 2nd runner-up was NU Pep Squad. They were also the same winners as last year.
The Samsung Stunner award was given to UP Pep Squad’s Nicolette Erica Ambulo. She got a Samsung NX1000 for winning.
Other cheering squads which did not win were Adamson Pep Squad (K-Pop Theme), De La Salle University Animo Squad (Boxing Theme), University of the East Pep Squad (Immortals Theme), University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe (Dancing Flame Theme), and Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion (Voltes V Theme).
Criteria for judging include Dance Technique (10 points), Lifts and Stunts (10), Choreography (10), Degree of Difficulty (10), Synchronization (10), Pyramids (10), Jumps (5), Tumbling Skills (5), Tosses (5), Formations (5), Audibility/Clarity of Cheers (5), Uniforms and Props (5), and Overall Effectiveness (10).
