Arnold Clavio trends on Twitter for expressing opinion on Azkals sexual harassment issue

GMA News’ Arnold Clavio has been trending on Twitter in the Philippines the whole day because of a rant he said during a morning show.

The words about being “not Filipinos” were aimed at the Philippine Azkals regarding the incident that the AFC match commissioner Cristy Ramos complained about and the unsatisfactory apology issued by the Azkals.

“Ngayon nag-sorry… para daw sa isa nilang kasamahan (at hindi kay Cristy ang komento). Saan ka nakakitang Azkal na may suso? Anong ‘Cup D, maybe a Cup B’ sa isang kasama? Palusot na lang ‘yon,” Clavio said.

“Sana nag-sorry, sorry na lang talaga," he added.

"Hindi ko kayo ka-kultura. Kasi wala dito (points to heart) at wala dito (points to head). Hindi naman kayo Filipino, e, nagpapanggap lang kayong kayumanggi, hindi dito lumaki,” he went on saying, pointing the fact that some of the team’s members grew up in other countries and therefore, not a Filipino by heart and not accustomed to the Filipino culture. “Mahirap 'yon, insensitive.”

"Alam naman nila' yung mga ‘sexcapades’ nila sa isa't isa, sino ang nag-penicillin, alam naman nila 'yan."

Those statements made by Clavio made football fans turn to social networking sites, particularly Twitter, to bash the news anchor. Most called him racist and some said he should apologize. The worst, however, were some of the Azkals supporters calling for termination of the news anchor from GMA-7.

Even celebrities have expressed their opinions on the matter. Angel Locsin, who is currently dating Azkals’ striker Phil Younghusband, tweeted: "I think Arnold Clavio is a good person. But this time, sobrang foul lang. That's his opinion. This is mine. Madali lang sumira ng reputasyon, mahirap ibalik. Konting sensitivity lang sana."

Cesca Litton said: “If we go by Arnold Clavio's definition of ‘Filipino’ as being ‘lumaki dito’ and ‘kayumanggi’ then we just lost millions of people.”

Arnold Clavio actually made the comments before the Azkals faced team Tajikistan for the deciding match on who will advance to the semifinals.

Ending the tirade, the news anchor wished the team good luck in their coming match so that they could be included in the big four.

And it seems like good luck was on the team’s side.

The Azkals won their 2012 AFC group stage match against Tajikistan on March 13th with a score of 2-1. The win made them advance to the semifinals with Korea, Palestine and Turkmenistan.

The Philippine Azkals will have a game this Friday, March 16, 2012, against Turkmenistan.
