Nina received some negative reaction when she did a whistle during a production number she performed in for the twentieth anniversary presentation of ABS-CBN's Sunday variety show, "ASAP."
According to some, Nina did the whistle to upstage singers Kyla and Juris Fernandez who both sang with Nina in the prod.
The Diamond Soul Siren, however, said that the whistle wasn't done to outshine anyone because that part was given to her, which the other singers in the prod also knew about.
“Yung whistle na 'yon, hindi 'yon surprise sa kanila [Kyla at Juris]," she told pep.ph in an interview. “Actually, hindi 'yon surprise sa production 'coz I was given the part na... Una, sabi, ‘O, Kyla, ikaw ang mag-whistle dito.’ Sabi ni Kyla, ‘Hindi po ako. Si Nina.’ So, sa akin ibinigay yung whistle. So, hindi 'yon surprise sa kanilang dalawa na magwi-whistle ako."
Nina also added that she gave her best for that part.
“Kaya para sa akin, kahit na sinasabi nila na nang-upstage ka or whatever, ibinigay sa akin yung part, e, so I should give my all, 'di ba?” she said.
Nina, Juris and Kyla sang Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" in the prod. The episode was aired on February 22.
