Tunying checks on Parola fire victims

Broadcast journalist Anthony Taberna visits the Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila, site of one of the largest fire incidents that broke out with the start of the Fire Prevention Month this March in “Tapatan ni Tunying” tomorrow (March 13).

Mollyn with Tunying

Here, Tunying meets one of the victims, Mollyn, a 58-year-old resident who shares how she feels that fire seems to follow them after enduring five separate incidents that razed the different houses she has lived in.

“I don’t know. I think we’re being tested. Fate determines if we survive challenges. Maybe that’s how it is,” she adds. A few days after the incident, Mollyn is back in her house, salvaging anything of value from the rubbles.

Meanwhile, firefighter Mark, one of the respondents in the same fire incident that razed the neighborhood of Mollyn, explains the difficulties they experienced in containing the situation. Aside from the lacking equipment, another factor poses a great risk to fighters like him, he says.

“There were circumstances where we were already fighting the fire, but the residents would take the hose from you. If you didn’t give it to them, they would harass you. Of course you would be forced to hand it over to them for your own safety,” Mark shares.

As a third-generation firefighter, Mark knows these factors very well. His grandfather and his father have also experienced similar challenges in the name of their profession.
