According to preliminary findings, the Oscar-winning actor hanged himself with a belt wedged between a closet door and a door frame inside his Northern California home. His body was found by his assistant who became concerned after the actor failed to respond to knocks on his bedroom door.

A pocket knife was also found near him and there were superficial cuts on his left wrist.
