Is 'Alyas Robin Hood' an 'Arrow' rip-off?

GMA-7 has recently released the teaser for the upcoming Dingdong Dantes-starrer, "Alyas Robin Hood," but it was immediately hounded by criticisms as netizens seemed to find it similar to the American series titled "Arrow."

Dingdong Dantes in Alyas Robin Hood teaser

According to the series' creative consultant and concept developer Suzette Doctolero, the upcoming Kapuso series is based on the British folklore Robin Hood, which she said is a public domain just like Tarzan.

"Let me tell you about one remake we did nine years ago, Ang Lupin ni Richard Gutierrez. Nag-react ang Japan, nagpadala ng demand letter ata sa GMA kasi kinopya daw sa kanila. Pero di sila nanalo dahil ang Lupin ng Japan ay mula sa Lupin na isang French novel. At dahil ito ay public domain gaya ng Tarzan, Robin Hood at iba pang akda, ay maaari itong paghalawan ng marami pang mga kwento. Walang ganitong claim pa o demand ang DC," Doctolero told pep.ph.

DC Entertainment is one of the producers of "Arrow." The CW series is also based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, a costumed archer who uses his skills to fight crime in his city.

Doctolero also talked to pep about masterplots being used by writers as guide.

"Kaunti lang ang masterplot sa mundo, na ginagamit na gabay ng mga writers sa kanilang mga obra. Nasa 30 o 35 lang ata 'yan. Ang example nito ay Robin Hood. Basta pag tungkol sa hooded vigilante hero na nagnanakaw from the rich to give to the poor. Isa rin dito ang Romeo and Juliet. So lahat ng kwentong tungkol sa dalawang magkaaway na pamilya at may two members doon na nagmamahalan ay automatic na mula sa Romeo and Juliet masterplot. Ang isa pang example ay Cinderella, basta tungkol sa rich girl na ginawang poor at inapi tapos she gets the prince/leading man. Kung iisa-isahin mo ang bawat pelikula sa mundo, at aanalisahin mo kung saan halaw na masterplot, matutukoy mo agad ito," she said.

In a Facebook post, she also clarified that a poster of "Alyas Robin Hood" that appeared on social media was not from GMA-7.

She said it could be fan-made, or done in purpose to put the series in bad light.

The said poster could have triggered the shocked emoji on Stephen Amell's (who plays the lead character in "Arrow") own Facebook post, sharing the teaser for "Alyas Robin Hood."

Paolo Ballesteros gets emotional over 'Die Beautiful' - Poster & Trailer

Paolo Ballesteros got emotional as he posts the teaser for "Die Beautiful" on his Instagram account. The Jun Lana-directed independent film is his first starring role. The movie also showcases his talents in "transformations" that he has shown the world through social media.

Die Beautiful - Poster

"Can't help but feel emotional, teary-eyed (talaga o baka baha ng luha) seeing this film and Trisha come alive," he wrote in the caption of the teaser.

The 33-year-old actor and TV host first transformed in the public eye through "Eat Bulaga's" mock beauty pageants where he wowed everyone with his very feminine looks once made up as a woman. He eventually tried doing his own make-up since his transformations became frequent, and transforming into the faces of famous local and international celebrities became a forte.

"Its hard enough to be the lead in a film, much more to play such a character (blisters from hours and hours of packaging tape, packaging tape for junjun) and to do your own makeup transformations (and adjust it yourself on set infront of the camera at 3am in the morning)," he recalled the pains he went through while shooting the film.

It was a happy experience, however, for him especially that the people he worked with gave their heart and soul for they were inspired with the story that the world will soon see.

"It was always a happy set. Too happy that i was always looking forward to the next day of filming. Its because Everyone (From direk Jun to utility) gave his heart and soul to this film. Endured everything because Everyone was inspired with what a beautiful story we have to tell. To Everyone thank you (alam nyo na mga mem). We can't wait to show you our Beautiful film. World Premiere soon," he wrote.

Check out the teaser of "Die Beautiful" below.

Atom Araullo took to social media on Sunday afternoon to clarify a few points in his resignation as news reporter of ABS-CBN. It was after speculations surfaced that his career move was due to his strong political views.

'PBB Lucky Season 7' 1st Teen Eviction Night Results - Aizan Perez is evicted

The first teen eviction night of "Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Lucky Season 7" was held on Saturday, August 27, 2016. The eviction was not based on public votes but by the ability of the nominated housemates to do the LigTask Challenge with the least amount of time.

Before the LigTask Challenge, supporters of nominees Kisses Delavin, Christian Morones and Aizan Perez were able to send their support through the PadaLuck Twitter poll. Kisses won the poll as she got the highest number of PadaLuck tweets.

Kisses - 196,247 tweets

Aizan - 137,124 tweets

Christian - 4,346 tweets

The LigTask Challenge was all about Lola Pina, the houseguest that was from Kanlungan ni Maria, a home for the aged. There's a series of questions about Lola Pina and the choices has corresponding keys to a gate that would lead to the next level. The correct answer would have the right key. The nominee that would finish the course with the longest time would be the one evicted.

Since Kisses won the Twitter poll, she was able to start the challenge one gate ahead, but she admitted she got nervous and she doesn't run as fast.

From among the three nominees, Christian was the first to be announced safe from eviction. And after a suspenseful commercial break, it was announced that Kisses was safe and Aizan, the Old Skulit Boy ng Batangas, was the first teen evictee this season.

Gerard Aizan Perez

Here are the rankings of the nominees in the LigTask Challenge:

Christian -

Kisses - 2 minutes and 29 seconds

Aizan - 3 minutes and 4 seconds

According to the announcement made by Big Brother to the housemates, the evictees will be determined by the LigTask Challenge until the Lucky 7 housemates are determined.

'The Voice Kids 3' Final Showdown - Top 3 performs duet with coaches and upbeat songs

The final showdown of "The Voice Kids" season 3 was aired live from Resorts World Manila on Saturday, August 27, 2016. The representative of all three teams performed two songs each - their duets with their coaches and upbeat numbers. Their power ballad performances will take place at the grand finals on Sunday.

TVK 3 Final Showdown

The voting lines were opened after the performances, up until 12 midnight. Only one vote per SIM was allowed. On Sunday, the voting lines will be opened again right after the power ballad numbers, and that, combined with the votes from Saturday, will determine the season's grand champion.

The first to perform was Justin Alva of Kamp Kawayan. He sang Shawn Mendes' "Stitches" with his coach Bamboo Mañalac. They performed liked they were throwing lines at each other and Lea Salonga described it as "intense" while Sharon Cuneta said Justin seemed like a seasoned performer already.

Joshua Oliveros of FamiLea and his coach, the Broadway Diva, did Basil Valdez's "Nais Ko" which brought out the kid's vocal range. The emotions in his voice shone through, especially that it was a Tagalog song. Sharon commented about Joshua's good delivery and how it felt like the "grand finals" already. Bamboo, meanwhile, commended his smile and said it was a "great job."

Antonetthe Tismo of Team Sharon sang Apo Hiking Society's "Batang-bata Ka Pa" with her coach. It was quite emotional for the viewers because the video showing Sharon visiting Antonetthe's house under a bridge in Parañaque was shown before the performance. The megastar also said that she chose the song because she doesn't want the kid to forget that she's still a child despite the things she does (she works to help in her family's finances) for her family.

Coach Bamboo described Antonetthe and Sharon's duet as "nice and warm and sunny" while coach Lea said the young artist showed that she can also sing sweet and mellow songs.

The upbeat songs followed after the commercial break.

Antonetthe's rendition of Jennifer Lopez's "Let's Get Loud" could have been flawless if not for forgotten lyrics and failure to deliver that last note.

Justin's mash-up performance of "Monster/Lose Yourself" looked so young it was perfect for him. He sang and danced and owned the stage like a true performer.

Last to perform was Joshua with After Image's "Mangarap Ka." It showcased his high notes and his abilities to perform not just ballads but fast songs, as well.

Although there's still the power ballads on Sunday night, these Saturday performances could have already helped you decide who you want to be the grand champion of "The Voice Kids" season 3.

To vote, just type VOICE<space><Name of Artist> (Joshua, Justin or Antonet) and send to 2366 for all networks.

Viral need-a-date ad turned movie in 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates'

Based on the real story of brothers Mike and Dave Stangle, who posted the following ad on Craigslist stating their need for wedding dates for their cousin’s wedding: TWO MEN NEED WEDDING DATES : My brother and I are looking for wedding dates. We've been told by the bride that bringing dates is "mandatory" so we "won't harass all of my friends all night" and "stay under control.” Rather than ask some fringe women in our lives to go and face the inevitable 'does this mean he wants to take it to the next level!?' questions, we'd rather bring complete strangers and just figure it out. Still reading? In anticipation of your questions we've developed an FAQ section below.

MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES

The ad became a viral phenomenon in hours, and the story soon spread from the internet to media outlets the world over. It also displayed a remarkable prescience; the boys estimated an 85% chance of their story becoming a movie, though they said, “we refuse the right to let Ashton Kutcher play either one of us.”

Well, as luck would have it, their story is now a movie – “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” and there isn’t a Kutcher in sight. In the movie, the titular Mike (Adam DeVine) and Dave (Zac Efron) are also brothers, warned by their family to smarten-up their hard-partying ways before their sister’s wedding, and to bring two respectable girls as dates. But the girls they end up choosing, played by Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, aren’t quite as wholesome as they expect. And as the real Stangles explain, some artistic license has been taken to turn the film into this year’s hottest R-rated comedy.

The core of the film’s comedy and much of its heart is the brotherly bond between the two guys. “Mike and Dave are close,” states director Jake Szymanski. “They’ve grown up together, still live together, work together, party together, and ultimately learn some lessons together.”

“Mike and Dave adore their sister,” confirms Efron. “Their mantra is: ‘We’re doin’ it for Jeanie! Everything we do is for Jeanie!’  They protect and love her and have put her on a pedestal. She forgives them for all the mischief they do.”

To make this wedding go smoothly for Jeanie, Mike and Dave are told they must bring dates to the nuptials. “So, Mike and Dave come up with a ‘foolproof’ plan to find respectable dates,” says Devine. “They troll for them on Craigslist—where they can also find lawnmowers and stuff.”

While the filmmakers strove to capture specific aspects of the siblings’ personalities, the physical differences between the real and reel Stangles were striking. “I want to say that Mike and Dave are around 11 feet tall,” Devine notes. “They made me and Zac Efron [who plays Dave] feel like little elf people.”

And what did (real) Mike and Dave make of this whole “Hollywood” experience? “They got guys to play us who are not as good looking as us, or as tall, but they are better actors,” says Dave. “I’ll give them that. And Stephen Root, who plays our dad, seems to like us more than our real dad.”

This year’s hottest R-18 comedy date movie – “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” will open in cinemas nationwide on September 14 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Kate Mara's latest mission in 'Morgan'

From her rescue mission in “The Martian,” Kate Mara stars anew in the upcoming action thriller “Morgan” where her latest mission brings her to a remote, top-secret location where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident.

Kate Mara in Morgan

When “Morgan” (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) suddenly attacks one of her handlers, the corporation overseeing and funding the project calls in a special “risk management consultant,” Lee Weathers, to investigate. Kate Mara, who had just come off a starring turn in Ridley Scott’s blockbuster, Oscar-nominated “The Martian,” portrays Lee. “My character is hired to visit the facility and assess Morgan’s viability and whether it presents a continuing risk,” Mara explains. In short, Lee holds the power of life or death over the subject of her investigation.

The other scientists and staff at the facility soon come to understand that Lee, despite her position as a kind of corporate crisis manager—a “suit”—is someone not to be taken lightly, and holds more than a few surprises of her own in dealing with an escalating threat. “Lee is very determined, very skilled, and very well-trained,” adds Mara.

Mara was further attracted to the story’s human elements, as well as to its different facets. “There’s definitely drama there, as well as a lot of thrills, action, and sometimes horror. But most of all, it’s about what it means to be human. I like that it’s so layered.”

One of the more daunting challenges for both Mara and Taylor-Joy was the brutal fights waged between their two characters. Designed and choreographed by stunt coordinator Paul Herbert and his team, the battles royale are among the film’s centerpieces, revealing unexpected facets of what appeared to be a trouble-shooting corporate “suit” and an innocent-looking “experiment” gone wrong.

“Kate and Anya were really impressive,” says director Luke Scott. “For those fight scenes, they turned themselves into action heroes.”

An Emmy-award nominee for her role in David Fincher’s television series “House of Cards,” Kate Mara’s impressive film credits include her feature film debut in “Random Hearts” for director Sydney Pollack and was soon followed by “Brokeback Mountain” for director Ang Lee, “Transsiberian” with Ben Kingsley and Woody Harrelson for director Brad Anderson, “We Are Marshall” with Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox for director McG, “Shooter” with Mark Wahlberg for director Antoine Fuqua; and Stone of Destiny with Charlie Cox for director Charles Martin Smith.

Mara also appeared in the Academy Award nominated film “127 Hours” with James Franco and Amber Tamblyn for director Danny Boyle. She co-starred in “Transcendence” alongside Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall and Morgan Freeman. Her latest works in recent years include “Fantastic Four,” “Captive” and the award-winning “The Martian.”

“Morgan” will open this September 7 in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Paolo Ballesteros to return to 'Eat Bulaga!' soon

Fans of Paolo Ballesteros will surely be glad to know that the TV host-actor will soon be back on "Eat Bulaga!" It has been confirmed by Wally Bayola, one of the show's co-hosts, although he added that only the management would know the exact date of the comeback.

Paolo Ballesteros and Wally Bayola

Before Paolo's comeback, however, he already got reunited with Wally and Jose Manalo (the three are collectively known as JoWaPao) at the shoot of a movie project.

Wally related the reunion in an interview with pep.ph.

"Nagkita-kita kaming tatlo, kasi nag-start na kami doon sa project na gagawin namin," he said. "Nagkita-kita kami, yakap-yakap kami."

The King of Makeup Transformation was last seen on "Eat Bulaga!" last March. No reason was officially released as to why he suddenly stopped appearing on the 37-year-old show, but it was said that his rants on Facebook regarding how he and his entourage were treated during the most recent Ad Summit caused his suspension.

Regarding Wally's advice to Paolo, he said, "Ang talagang advice lang namin sa isa't isa, pray lang 'yan. Ang tawag niya sa 'kin, 'Girl, pray lang.'"

He said that to pray was also Paolo's advice to him when he got suspended from the show due to a video scandal.

And to give you an idea on when Lola Tidora (Paolo's KalyeSerye character) will be seen again on the show, Wally said, "September or last week of August, mga ganun."

Meanwhile, Paolo is currently doing two movies - "Bakit Lahat ng Guwapo, May Boyfriend?" and "Die Beautiful."

Legacy of fear reborn in latest 'Blair Witch' movie

Back in 1999, “The Blair Witch Project” became a global phenomenon and left a haunting fear of being alone in the woods. The nearly no-budget film grossed millions and set the gold standard for found footage movies, spawning a new generation of horror fans.

“Elly Kedward, the woman accused of witchcraft and left to die in the Maryland woods in 1785, is the first recorded story of the Blair Witch legend,” says executive producer Gregg Hale. “But the evil in those woods is much, much older than that.”

For several years, Lionsgate had been searching for the right concept to reboot Blair Witch, as well as filmmakers who could satisfy the fans of the first film and reach a new generation of moviegoers.

In the latest “Blair Witch” movie, it’s been 20 years since James’s sister and her two friends vanished into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland while researching the legend of the Blair Witch, leaving a trail of theories and suspicions in their wake. Along with a group of college students, James venture into the Black Hills Forest with the same camera in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of his sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

“When it first came out, I was one of a billion high school kids taking a camcorder into the woods and doing a Blair Witch spoof with my friends,” says director Adam Wingard.  “The film had a total dedication toward authenticity. No one has so completely committed to that type of realism before or since.”

With so many movies being remade and reimagined, the filmmakers were excited to see Blair Witch get another shot.  To hold true to the Blair Witch mythos, scribe Simon Barrett familiarized himself with every hint of information the first film contains, from old message boards and Facebook groups to graphic novels and young adult books published only in Europe.

Still, the first film is not required viewing to enjoy the sequel. “We wanted to take the mythos further and explore how outsiders approach the haunting and how locals see the legend. If you have seen the original, you’ll find even deeper layers and levels here to appreciate and debate once it’s over,” says producer Steven Schneider. “If you haven’t seen the original movie, this one will frighten the hell out of you regardless.”

While much of the fear behind the first Blair Witch relied on what wasn’t shown, the sequel terrifies audiences and excites hardcore fans by revealing more of what lurks after dark.

“Whatever evil is in the woods has only gotten stronger since the first film,” says Wingard. “I wanted to create something that felt like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, not in terms of the violence, but in terms of the relentless intensity that movie gives you. You’re constantly running from something into a scenario that’s even more frightening.”

“The challenge for us was to make a modern horror movie that acknowledged and surpassed everything that’s happened in horror over the last 17 years, including films like The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw, and have the film feel as real to audiences as it did in 1999,” says Barrett.

Rediscover fear when the latest “Blair Witch” movie opens September 14 in cinemas from Pioneer Films.

Daniel Radcliffe goes undercover cop in 'Imperium'

Daniel Radcliffe, who rocketed to worldwide stardom in the phenomenal “Harry Potter” films, stars anew in the intense action thriller “Imperium.” Inspired by real events, the movie is directed by Daniel Ragussis and also stars Toni Collette, Tracy Letts, Devin Druid, Pawel Szajda with Nestor Carbonell and Sam Trammell.

IMPERIUM poster

In “Imperium,” Radcliffe takes on the role of Nate Foster, a young, idealistic FBI agent who goes undercover to take down a radical right-wing terrorist group. The bright up-and-coming analyst must confront the challenge of sticking to a new identity while maintaining his real principles as he navigates the dangerous underworld of white supremacy.

“Imperium” co-writer Mike German has the kind of pedigree that commands respect: he served in the FBI for 16 years, 12 of them as an undercover agent tasked with infiltrating dangerous white supremacy groups in order to prevent domestic terrorist attacks. German successfully embedded himself with extremist groups on multiple occasions, leading to criminal convictions. German’s real life experiences infiltrating homegrown white supremacist terror cells intent on starting race wars, form the basis of the “Imperium” screenplay.

Setting the movie in the present day was something German and Ragussis quickly agreed on, believing the film could better address important law enforcement and terrorism prevention issues that have dominated the national conversation. Therefore, the film brings attention to the FBI’s seldom discussed racial-ethnic mapping program, in which American Muslims and other minority populations are controversially targeted. IMPERIUM also explores the challenges faced by FBI agents working with limited resources to prevent domestic terrorism from white supremacists and other right-wing extremist threats. With the government prioritizing the fight against the Islamic terrorist threat, FBI agents working on battling domestically cultivated perils often must fight for funding and proper support.

In the end, Mike German expressed admiration for Ragussis’s efforts to create a film of thematic and emotional integrity true to what he experienced in the field, commenting, “Daniel’s unique vision and dedication to telling this story in an accurate, non-sensationalistic manner impressed me from day one. The final product depicts the inner workings of the FBI and undercover agents in particular, more accurately than any film I’ve seen. I couldn’t be more pleased.”

“Imperium” opens September 14 in cinemas nationwide from OctoArts Films International.

'Godzilla: Resurgence' brings largest and most menacing monster in the franchise

Toho Co., Ltd., one of Japan’s largest film companies that produced the original Godzilla (Gojira) feature film, reboots the world’s most successful monster franchise in “Godzilla: Resurgence.”

Godzilla Resurgence _ new poster

Currently Japan’s blockbuster of a monster at the box-office, “Godzilla: Resurgence” is the 31st movie in the franchise and being one of Toho’s most important characters, directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi made the largest monster to-date at 389 feet tall, significantly monstrous from the last Godzilla movie (2014) that stood 354 feet tall. Breaking new records in size, the humongous fearsome monster in “Godzilla: Resurgence” also has new striking design bearing the darkest and most menacing look than in the past films.

“Godzilla: Resurgence” brings the monster back on Japan’s soil, in contemporary times, as it surfaces in the country for the first time. In the movie, when an abandoned yacht in Tokyo Bay is attacked and the Aqua-line soon collapses, Japan’s Deputy Chief Rando Yaguchi theorizes that the damage was done by a living creature. Soon, the country is on the run when an unidentified terrifying creature suddenly towered the city, destroying everything, even killing people in its path. With Japan’s government officials working with special envoys and scholars, researching on the mysterious creature, the special group eventually names the dangerous creature Godzilla which is energized by nuclear fission, making it indestructible.

GODZILLA RESURGENCE

In a recent review in www.scified.com by Danzilla93, the writer raves about the latest “Godzilla: Resurgence” noting its origins story and Godzilla being the most terrifying of all monsters, “Without getting into specifics, this film will surely please fans who have been dreaming of seeing a darker, scarier Godzilla film made one day. Make no mistake, this film is terrifying. Godzilla hasn’t been this scary since 1954, and this is definitely not an accident. The original film is recalled more times than can be written here without spoiling key moments and fun surprises, and a clear reverence for the origins of the Godzilla character is present.”

In another rave review by contributor Ollie Barder at www.forbes.com - he wrote that “Godzilla: Resurgence” is surprisingly good. Further, Barder is convinced of the success of “Godzilla: Resurgence” at the box-office is well-deserved, “For a modern Godzilla movie to be this good definitely surprised me and I am curious to see how Toho will take this new version forward in forthcoming installments. Already at the time of writing, “Resurgence” has taken over 3 billion yen at the Japanese box office, beating out Legendary’s 2014 effort in the process. It’s clear that both (writers and directors) Anno and Higuchi  did something right here and at the very least watching a giant monster destroy an inept and corrupt government never gets old.”

“Godzilla: Resurgence” stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi and Satomi Ishihara that will open in local (Phils.) cinemas this August 31 to be released by Pioneer Films.
