Actor Dominic Roque portrays a lone survivor in a multiple murder case that dates back to 2010 in “SOCO,” the country’s first and leading crime investigative documentary program on TV in its 9thanniversary episode this Saturday (Nov 29) on ABS-CBN.
Dominic will play “Boy,” a spider vendor, who was mercilessly shot, along with his friends, by security guards for allegedly trespassing a vacant lot the guards were watching over.
Although critically wounded, Boy survived the attack. However, the three friends who were with him when they were hunting spiders were killed.
According to “SOCO” anchor and veteran crime journalist Gus Abelgas, the program chose to feature the real-life incident because it is a cold case the program’s team has looked into for almost a year. Their investigation led to the arrest of three perpetrators. At present, the mastermind of the incident is still at large.
“We’ve realized that there are unfortunate victims who are not given justice or witnesses and other people who can provide information on a particular case and want to help. We help them so those forgotten cases can be reexamined,” said Gus.
For the past nine years, the program has successfully helped in making criminals face justice. Gus is particularly proud that the courts and authorities have used pieces of evidence and suspects’ testimonies gathered by the “SOCO” team.
“It has been our team’s legacy that we are able to find the truth. The bottomline is giving public service to those who deserve justice,” he added.
“SOCO” has also gone beyond TV by holding free information dissemination drives called “SOCO Fest” in several universities where Gus and the program’s staff share with criminology and mass communication students how they pursue cases, present stories, and look for evidence.
