Manny Pacquiao's roots traced

Two days before the match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., broadcast journalist Anthony Taberna travels all the way to General Santos City to trace the roots of Pacquiao and speak with the people who first rallied behind the Filipino pride.

In tomorrow’s (May 1) episode, Pacman’s brother Domingo Velbestre and sister Lisa Velbestre-Onding attest to the story of a young, poor boy who turned to boxing as a way of finding a better life for his family.

It was Manny’s uncle, Zardo Mejia who would buy him his first boxing gloves and guide him in his first amateur bouts. Up to this day, Zardo has kept Manny’s first boxing gloves. “Importante sa akin ito kasi may sentimental value ito kasi ito ang unang gloves na binili ko na ginamit ni Manny. Hindi ko akalain na siya ay magiging sobrang sikat na at saka naging congressman pa,” Zardo says as he shows his prized items.

Anthony also talks to Bren Evangelio, Manny’s congressional chief-of-staff, about the boxing champion’s work ethic, and to Manny’s spiritual counsel Pastor Jeric Soriano about Manny’s big spiritual transformation.
