Stephen Daldry's "The Reader" only won one award at the recent Oscars, but it's a very good one, indeed. Kate Winslet who played Hanna Schmitz, a former SS prison guard on trial for war crimes, won Best Actress. It's her first Oscar after being nominated five times. She already holds an Oscar record for having had five nominations before reaching the age of thirty-two. Winslet is now thirty-three.
Kate Winslet bested other heavy weights including the Oscar veteran Meryl Streep who has had fifteen nominations and two wins.
