'Heneral Luna' chosen as Philippine entry to 2016 Oscars

Currently showing in Philippine cinemas, "Heneral Luna" has been chosen as the country's official entry to the 2016 Oscars.

Directed by Jerrold Tarog, the movie is a historical biopic set during the Philippine-American war. It tells the story of Gen. Antonio Luna - from the time he was assigned as the head of the revolutionary army up to his assassination.

The news about "Heneral Luna's" selection as the country's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of next year's Oscars was announced on the movie's Facebook page.

"We are happy to announce and share with everyone the good news: HENERAL LUNA has been selected as the Philippines' Official Entry to the 2016 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film Category!," the announcement read.

The movie is now on its 2nd week, opening to 101 cinemas on September 9. It has become more popular through word of mouth and social media that there was even a recent online clamor when it was reported that the number of cinemas showing the movie has been reduced to just about 40. With good reviews it's been getting, however, theaters showing the movie have increased to around 70.

"Heneral Luna" stars John Arcilla in the titular role. Also in the cast are Arron Villaflor, Mon Confiado, Joem Bascon, Archie Alemania, Alex Medina, Art Acuna, Epi Quizon, Nonie Buencamino and Lorenz Martinez.
