‘Adarna’ opens Dulaang UP’s 38th season

As its season opener, Dulaang UP will stage Adarna, a retelling of the 18th century folklore believed to be written by Jose de la Cruz or “Huseng Sisiw.”

Adarna, the well-known and much-loved Filipino folk tale, opens another year of exciting plays from Dulaang UP which is now on its 38^th theater season. Adarna tells the story of Don Juan, the youngest of three princes who went on a journey to find the elusive mystical bird called Ibong Adarna believed to be the cure for their ailing father, the king of Berbanya. Don Juan’s quest whisks him to adventures in different lands, encounters with sage men and beautiful princesses and challenges that will test the young prince’s courage and mettle.

UP Playwrights’ Theater Restages Hit Children’s Play “Umaaraw, Umuulan Kinakasal ang Tikbalang”

Be enthralled by the colorful creatures of Philippine folk literature and mythology as the UP Playwrights’ Theater puts the spotlight once again on Umaaraw Umuulan Kinakasal ang Tikbalang, Dulaang UP’s hit production last season. The playis adapted from Gilda Cordero-Fernando's children’s short story The Magic Circle, written by Rody Vera and directed by José Estrella.

Relive Jepoy and Galis’ journey to a magical wonderland teeming with strange creatures and even stranger events. Be acquainted with the enormous Doña Geronima with her clean and shiny plates and her Spanish-speaking dwarf maitre d' Pacqui. Chat with talking pythons and monkeys, tiyanak debutantes, ballroom dancing aswangs, and with the woeful kapre named Kap. To cap the adventure off, witness the exchange of vows between two enormous tikbalangs as it rains and shines at the same time.

Sam Concepcion is "Peter Pan"

Kapamilya teen star Sam Concepcion will topbill the STAGES and Repertory Philippines' production of the well-loved children's classic, Peter Pan.

Sam, who has been with STAGES even before he joined showbiz, is not new to Peter Pan. During the 2004 Trumpets production of Peter Pan and the Time Machine, he already played the role of Wendell, one of the leads in the musical. By then, Chevy Mercado played the role of Peter Pan.

Some promotional photos for the upcoming show has hit the web, and may I just say that Sam has beefed up a little (or is it just Photoshop?). Also, that naughty smile in the first pic is so Peter Pan, and if I'd base on these pics whether I'd watch it or not, I would definitely be one of those who'd fall in line on the first day.

Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Jaime Del Mundo direct the production, and aside from Sam, his older brother Kevin Concepcion is also in the cast as his alternate. Now how cool is that? Tippy Dos Santos will be Wendy with Cara Barredo as her alternate. The versatile Michael Williams will be the mean Captain Hook.
