ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, along with a number of current and past employees of the network, was charged with libel on Friday, June 14, 2013, by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.
After nine years, the court has finally come to a decision regarding the case filed by GMA Network. The libel case was in relation to the controversial coverage videos of the arrival in Manila on July 22, 2004 of OFW Angelo dela Cruz who was abducted in Iraq.
The coverage videos were first aired by ABS-CBN, then were also seen being aired on GMA-7. The Kapamilya Network reported the incident as “copyright infringement” and even accused the Kapuso Network as stealing their exclusive coverage, using the words “nagnanakaw ng aming eksklusibong kuha.”
GMA-7, meanwhile, explained that the videos they used were syndicated from Reuters and they did not steal anything from ABS-CBN.
Along with Lopez, those charged with libel were ABS-CBN journalists Lynda Jumilla, Annie Eugenio, Dondi Garcia, Maria Progena, Estonillo Reyes, Jose Ramon Olives and Jesus Maderazo, as well as former employees who were with the network at the time the libel was committed, namely Erwin Tulfo, Beth Frondoso, Luis Alejandro, Jose Magsaysay Jr., Alfonso Marquez and Luchi Cruz-Valdes.
